The Best Dam Breed

May 2017

Again ewe numbers have taken a hit. Last years hot FE season knocked many off which have not been replaced and the continued poor return for lamb and strong beef market has resulted in a continued shift towards beef cattle.
There are bright spots on the horizon with optimism for new markets and branding opportunities. As breeders of the countrys' most productive genetics we are placed well to respond to a resurgence in enthusiasm for sheep production. Keep you foot on the phenotype - feet, structure and solid mouths. Our competitors, many of the top flocks in the country, are chasing numbers at the expense of structure. We have highly productive sheep, let's also become known for having sheep with solid structure and phenotype.

Coopworth Genetic Board has been in discussion with Beef and Lamb Genetics over the past several months. There are several proposed changes to SIL which have many breeders concerned. As your representatives we have been attempting to keep lines of communication open with BLG to make sure we are in the loop, understanding what they are doing with our recording service and most importantly having influence in these decisions. NZ has the worlds best recording service and we aim to keep it that way !
Small breeders, often family businesses, are the backbone of the NZ sheep industry. Coopworth Genetics has made it a point to remind BLG of this.  The BLG Breeder Forum is in Napier this year, plan on attending if possible as this is a great place to chat with other breeders and hear what is happening with BLG and to have your say.

Those attending the Coopworth Conference in Tasmania will be packing their bags soon. Bill Scott Young and Leanne Sherriff have put together a great itinerary for us and we are all really looking forward to it. We will be holding the AGM as part of the Conference there. For those of you not with us this year, let me know if there is any General Business you wish to table. Our Board is always happy to hear from other members who are willing to contribute, succession in a group like ours is important to keep fresh ideas coming in.

For those heading to Tazzie be sure to pack a few warm woolies as they are having frosts now and we could have a few chilly mornings. Check the weather forecast when you pack !

All the best for a great scanning and a good winter.
