About Hinenui

Hinenui Genetics runs 1500 fully SIL recorded ewes located in Gisborne, on the East Coast of the North Island, along with 140 breeding cows, we are a family-operated sheep stud that has been running for three generations.

Owned and managed by Phil and Deana Cook, along with their three children. The stud traces its origins to the 1970s when Deana’s grandfather, Bill Teutenberg, began Coopworth sheep breeding and was among the first in New Zealand to introduce Facial Eczema testing. The business was later passed on to his son, Brett Teutenberg, along with his wife Lucy, who diversified the breeding program to include additional breeds.

Today, Hinenui Genetics specialises in Coopworth, Romworth, Romney, and ShedX rams—bred for Facial Eczema tolerance, worm resistance, and genetic excellence.

We record for full maternal traits – Reproduction, Growth, Survival, Adult Size + Meat. Due to our location and environment, we have a strong emphasis on Facial eczema tolerance and Worm resistance and have added the Meat index to put emphasis on increasing carcase yeild. We have held FEGold status since its establishment in 2012.
