About Romani

The Romani Coopworth flock originates from the MNCC stud founded by Edward Dinger in the early 1970s. Edward developed the stud into a leading FE-Tolerant flock, with very good fertility. The Romani flock started in 2005, absorbing the MNCC flock in 2015 when Edward retired.

We farm 700ha breeding and finishing sheep and beef near Taumarunui, about 50km North of Mt Ruapehu in the Central North Island.

Sheep are ideally suited to our North Island hill country, although our typically cool winters and sometimes very hot, humid summers and autumns bring their challenges. Facial Excema, internal parasites and flystrike are all threats.

We are focused on physically robust, disease-tolerant sheep that are fit for our environment, requiring minimal input and handling. No drench to adults, and minimal to lambs. No dipping for flystrike or lice. High stocking rates and running studs with commercials in bigger mobs helps keep the pressure on.

Our breeding objectives, many of which we have achieved, are;

  • Ewes with calm temperament and excellent mothering ability, scanning 180-200%, weaning 150-175%

  • 34kg high-yielding lambs at 90 days old

  • Short bare tails to eliminate docking, no dags, bare breech

  • Highly FE-Tolerant (currently FE testing at .68 and rising)

  • Excellent worm tolerance, even to barberspole worms, no drench in adults, and little in lambs.

  • Flystrike tolerance, no dipping required

  • Structurally sound with excellent feet and teeth that stay that way through to 6-8 years old, no lameness

  • Reduced ewe wastage through greater immune competency and robust constitution, with the ability to rapidly regain condition score after weaning

  • Clipping 5-6kg/year quality wool

We welcome you to come and visit any time. Every day is an open day. You are also welcome to call or email for a chat; we love talking about sheep almost as much as we love eating them!
